Do you know someone who has been injured in a traffic accident?

Maybe you have found yourself in such an inopportune situation whether it was 5 years ago, or 5 days ago. Frequently, in the case of “routine” accidents, where impact was minimal, the “victim” may walk away without feeling any signs of injury or pain. However, 9 out of 10 times, the next day, or even several days later, this person may awaken with neck, shoulder, low back, and even sciatic pain that radiates all the way down the leg. This is the norm with post accident trauma, and it tells its own story. If left untreated, it can lead to incapacitating and chronic pain conditions. Western medicine, in my experience, does little in these cases other than medicating the pain with pharmaceuticals that can be dangerous over time to the liver and kidneys, and sometimes can cause addiction and negative side effects. Are there any other alternatives for treating this post motor vehicle accident pain without medications? And is would this type of treatment be paid for by my automobile insurance? Welcome to the solution: Acupuncture to the rescue!

Will acupuncture be covered by my automobile insurance policy?

The first thing to understand if you or someone you know has been in a motor vehicle accident and has been injured, which may mean “aches and pain”, is that, the State of Oregon is a no-fault state. This means that it doesn’t matter if you caused the accident or not, you are entitled to receive personal injury protection (PIP) under your automobile insurance policy. Oregon law mandates that you, and all passengers in your car, have up to $15,000 each to cover any medical bills resulting from the car accident. You can choose to go directly to an Acupuncturist as a primary care provider for post accident care. If you require x-rays, scans or MRIs, I would recommend that you also see a Medical Doctor.

How can acupuncture help me?

Acupuncture simultaneously treats all the collective physical symptoms while also treating the depression and anxiety that can result from just being in pain or not being able to do routine tasks or exercise. Acupuncture has been shown to have better results in treatment for aches, pains and posttraumatic stress than conventional medicine.

Acupuncture is only one of the modalities of treatment that Chinese medicine has to offer in post accident care. You may also be treated with therapeutic massage called “tuina”, gua sha (gua= rubbing/ sha= inflamation) and cupping (suction) techniques (both reduce inflammation, moxabustion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moxibustion), and herbal medicine. These are all part of the story that explains how Chinese medicine can produce effective results for treating even the most stubborn and acute post accident pain.

Does acupuncture hurt?

If you are concerned as to whether acupuncture is painful, let me explain to you what most people feel. There can be a slight stinging sensation called “qi” which comes as a result of unblocking locked up, traumatized areas. However, normally, this is felt more like a slight pinch, as the diameter of acupuncture needles are 40 times smaller than those of conventional hyperdermic needles. The most important element is that they work. A therapist in the Portland area used acupuncture after her 2nd accident early this year, and she couldn’t believe how much relief she experienced, especially after having gone the more conventional route on her prior accident. She relates, “They just gave me pain meds and told me to rest and not to move around too much. I still felt the pain, plus, the medications made me feel tired and grumpy, which made the pain worse like a vicious circle. Acupuncture actually made me feel good. It changed my mood as it reduced and eventually eliminated the pain.”

How do I know if my PIP insurance will still cover my treatment?

If you still have pain from a recent accident and have not yet closed out your PIP claim, please call my office and we will be more than happy to check with your insurance if your treatment will be covered. Even if your claim has been closed but you are still experiencing pain, please feel free to come in and let me help you be pain free. The cost is still low, especially in proportion to how effective it is. Don’t let pain ruin your life any longer. Allow acupuncture to shed your pain for once and for all.
